Resurrecting Wholeness

“Resurrecting Wholeness” explores the intersection of faith, mental health, and Black masculinity through the lens of the biblical narrative of Lazarus. In John 11:1–44, Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead, a profound act symbolizing renewal, hope, and the possibility of reclaiming life after profound despair.

This multidisciplinary documentary film uses Lazarus’s story as a metaphor for Black men's struggles in confronting and overcoming mental health challenges, creating a space for vulnerability, dialogue, and healing by featuring the expression of visual and mixed arts, interactive exhibits, and the reactions of black men in the community to them.

Interactive Exhibits

"The Tomb": A dimly lit, immersive space where visitors can walk through a symbolic representation of Lazarus’s tomb. It features audio recordings of Black men sharing personal experiences with depression, anxiety, and societal pressures.

"Unbound": A participatory installation where visitors write messages of hope, healing, or encouragement on strips of cloth, symbolizing the unbinding of Lazarus’s grave clothes.

Log Line: “An artist ventures through his psyche as a part of his creative process while creating an original art piece. He reflects on a near-death experience during a mental episode and struggles to come to terms with the second chance he was gifted at life.”
